IN-FOCUS Advice: Portrait Lighting

IN-FOCUS Advice: Portrait Lighting

Four types of Lighting: Flat, Short, Broad and Split
Great images start with great lighting. Changing the direction of your light creates different results on your subject’s face. Take a look at four basic lighting techniques and try to create them yourself!

Flat Lighting
This type of lighting occurs when your light source is directly in front of the subject. On-camera flash creates this result. The subject is evenly lit across her face. This is not a bad portrait, but the following lighting techniques help to add dimension to the subject.
Short Lighting
This type of lighting is preferred by most professional photographers. The light source comes at a 45 degree angle to the subject. The shadow side of the face is dominant to the camera. This slims the face. When done correctly, a splash of light should reach across to the shadow side and light a section of the cheek, as seen in the image above.
Broad Lighting
Here the light source also comes at a 45 degree angle to the subject, but the lit side of the face is dominant to the camera. This broadens the face. With larger subjects this type of lighting is not preferred since it makes the face look bigger. However, it can be used for slimmer subjects as it still adds dimension.
Split Lighting
For split lighting the light source comes at a 90 degree angle to the subject. This type of lighting works great to create a dramatic mood. However, you have to make sure that the light is balanced and that the dark side is not too dark and the light side not too bright.
